Dumpling squishies: the 2026 squishy toy craze explained

What dumpling squishies and NeeDoh toys are, why kids are hunting them, UK and US prices, the recalls and fakes, and how to buy safely.

Updated 2026-10-14

A dumpling squishy is a palm-sized, soft, squeezable toy shaped like a steamed bao bun or dumpling, usually sold sealed in a little plastic "bamboo steamer" pot so you do not know which colour you have until you open it. They became one of the biggest children's toy crazes of 2026 in both the US and the UK, alongside NeeDoh, the older range of squishy fidget toys made by the US company Schylling.

This page explains what they are, why so many people are hunting for them, what they cost, and the real safety problems that have come with the craze: a US recall in October 2026, water beads, chemical-smelling fakes and a dangerous microwave "trend".

Which? describes the RMS Mystery Squishy Dumpling as the viral original, made by a UK-founded company, and says many lookalikes now exist. GlitterBeam makes the point that "dumpling squishy" now describes a trend more than one product, and that not every NeeDoh is a dumpling. For a fuller explanation, see what dumpling squishies are and why everyone is buying them.

Why interest is rising

The craze built over the first half of 2026 and was still going in the autumn. Some dated evidence:

GlitterBeam puts the appeal down to short videos: the squash-and-slow-rebound look works in a few seconds on screen, and blind packs with rare versions keep people buying.

Risks and downsides

The October 2026 US recall

On 1 October 2026 the CPSC announced a recall of about 37,000 ABC Trading "Squishy Dumpling" toys (model 3655) and "Crazy Squib Ball" toys (model 3984). They contain water beads that expand larger than the mandatory US toy standard allows. If a child swallows one, it can cause choking or a blocked intestine. They were sold in ABC Trading stores in Los Angeles and other shops across the US from April to June 2026 for 41 cents to $1.25. No injuries had been reported. Two other mystery dumpling and squishy bun toys were also recalled for water beads.

Water beads

A new US federal standard for water beads in toys, including squishy toys with beads sealed inside, took effect on 12 March 2026. The UK has no equivalent toy-specific rule that we could find, but the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a safety alert in 2024 telling parents to keep water beads away from children under 5.

Chemicals and fakes

In June 2026 OPSS recalled "Squeezy Dumplings" sold by a Cardiff cash and carry after testing found benzene in the outer layer. Councils in Wales, Cornwall and elsewhere have removed hundreds of unsafe or counterfeit squishies, many with a strong chemical smell and no maker's details.

Small parts, bursting and heat

Squishies can split. Smyths labels its dumplings as a choking hazard for under-3s. The CPSC has also warned about children microwaving squishies, which can make them burst and burn skin.

Money and pressure

Blind packs are designed to make you buy again. GlitterBeam's verdict was that the toy itself is fun but the pressure to collect every version is easier to resist, and resale prices can be several times the shop price.

How to get started

  1. Decide whether your child wants a dumpling specifically or any squishy. A plain NeeDoh in a known shape avoids the blind-pack gamble.
  2. Buy from a shop you can name and contact: a supermarket, a toy chain or the brand's listed stockists.
  3. Check the pack before you pay: maker or importer name and address, a UKCA or CE mark in the UK, an age warning and a batch code.
  4. Open it and smell it. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and others say to stop using any squishy with a strong chemical smell.
  5. Keep squishies away from under-3s, out of hot cars and never in the microwave.
